Off Road Bikers banned

Monday, April 20th, 2009

It turns out that some citys have big problems with off road bikers, yeadon being one of them. What I think they should do is introduce a “trailsbike for fixie” trade where by they will let you switch your bike for a nice fixie, this might coax at least a few of these wreckless offroad bikers out of their usual dangerous habits, and heck it would even do its own little bit for the environment!

The other thing that would be sensible would be to provide an off road biking place, the city is the home of the fixed gear, but offroading needs a home too.

A fixed gear bike

Wednesday, April 8th, 2009

A fixed gear bike, oh for xmas why don’t we all just buy 1 fixed gear bike? If everyone on the planet brought a fixed gear bike on the same day for someone they know climate change wouldnt be such an issue, the (should be rewarded) fixed gear bike makers would have to step up production but that one off cost would help out the polar bears, even if just a little bit. Plus itd be awesome fun seeing everyone you know and knowing they all have a fixed gear bike and they now have no excuse to not come out for a ride with you one day.

Oh wide world just go and get someone a fixed gear bike for thier birthday or xmas, I dare you.

Belt Driving Fixed Gear Bikes

Sunday, April 5th, 2009

Recently I have seen two harley davidson inspired belt driven bikes ride past me in town. Both caught my eye in a way no other bike really did before, as a cyclist (a fixie rider) maintaining my bike is actually quite an enjoyable pastime, but I know a lot of others that think maintaining a bicycle is dreadful. The chain being the pivitol means of propulsion on a bike makes it get the most abuse, im my experience out of all the components of a pushbike. So like the harley motorbikes that adopted the belt in favour of the traditional chain have finally dumped their magic into pushbikes? Supposedly these belt driven bikes never need lubrication (no more oil stains on your light coloured trousers) and provide smoother pedalling. Put simply at this point I don’t believe it.

For people who like having gears on their bikes these are available now, this example is the Trek Soho and features gears built into the back hub. I am yet to spot a fixie one for sale locally – But then I am very lazy today. I think in theory belt driven fixed gear bikes make a lot more sense than belt driven multi gear bikes. I mean it simplifies it a whole nother step.

Built from carbon fibre and rubber supposedly these bike belts are clean, don’t stretch within reasonable force – they took two years to appropriate into the perfect cycling form of the equivalent motorbike belt. They had to supposedly find the perfect tooth length and then in the end use thicker back end tubes to support the strain. Either way I hope they stick these on a nice fixie, or at least they date a bit so I can rip one off another second hand bike to play with. Belt driven fixies – Gotta be worth a months shedwork.

Fixed Gear Fantasys

Sunday, March 1st, 2009

Anyone got an idea where the fixed gear fantasys video went? I was happily watching it every now and again – checking back to rewatch it and then now its been taken down I cant find it anywhere online. Where did the Fixed Gear Fantasys bike video go?

If anyone finds it please replace it or shout me a link, I am interested in one of the bikes in it – looking to buy a part which is the same.

In other news Fixies are becoming way too popular, I almost preferred it when fixed gear fantasys wasnt a broad thing, now every tom dick and harry in my town is riding fixed gear :/

I have always had a plan in my head to do europe by bike, its a great Idea but to put something like that into action you have to have a fewquid behind you.  This is a nice video that shows why I would love to take my fixed gear around europe – I would record it all and put it on european fixed gear .com or something similar!

    Fixed gear road bike/bikes

    Friday, November 28th, 2008

Bikes are fun, wouldn’t you agree? Whether your chipping it into town on a fixed gear road bike or pelting down a muddy slope on something more rugged. But what would define as the worlds best bike? the one bike that irrelevant of money, materials (got to be real obviously) and time you would give anything for?

Would it be a fixed gear road bike? In actual fact, at least for me personally I would usually more opt for a fixed gear track bike, road bikes are nice but they don’t stand up to tricks like missed bunnyhops onto curbs etc very well, in fact I have a funny story about that but thats for another time, In my eyes the best bike I ever road was my 1980′s Raleigh fixed gear track bike, something I 100% regret selling on.

    Fixed gear mountain bike

    Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

Anyone ever ridden fixed gear down a mountain? I wouldn’t dare do it on my raleigh but I think I have seen a few single speed mountain bikes around, for the life of me I can’t remember where or what make they were – every bike shop I search online doesnt seem to have any – This makes me think its not a common make that produecs fixedgear mtb’s, they might have even been bespoke bikes?

In theory I almost thing fixed gear mountain biking would work better than it does in the city, you have your long complex down hills, you could still keep the common mountain bike suspension but just loose all the gears, youd be faster in downhills and the bike would be a good 10th lighter so jumping and controling it should be easier? I know its not a very fixie mentality but I might just buy or build one, for exploration if nothing else!
